You know how to tell when the protests are real?

When the signs are not in English.

OK, what's wrong with this picture? Canada's Trudeau says people in China should be allowed to protest

Reminder that the left inspire to be like the CCP. They want to be the boot.

"Biden brats"..? Or if not today's Democratic Party writ large, then its distinctly more progressive or left-leaning leaders (Pramila Jayapal, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, ...) and followers? Black Lives Matter activists and sympathizers? Greta Thunberg? The Socialist Party USA? A "rando" that was photographed setting his arm on fire because he wanted to call attention to Climate Change?

All of the above? Everyone who isn't a "Trump twit" or a Mitt Romney fan?

A reminder that the all purpose "left" is a word that has been so flagrantly misused on this forum that its currency has become absolutely worthless. Every unit of "left" on this forum is worth exactly $0.00 USD.

Welcome to the Race to the Bottom.

How would you define “left” with respect to modern American politics?

Has the definition changed during your lifetime?

Is the average American “leftist” substantially different from that of 60 years ago?

What, in your opinion, are the defining beliefs of “the Left”?

What are the important distinctions between “left” and “liberal” political philosophy?

These questions are open to anyone and feel free to replace "left" with "right".

My opinion... things have changed dramatically to the point where there is such a diametric difference in policy, that I don't think we ever really recover from this.

Years ago, I remember people telling me the parties were basically the same, blah blah. What we have now is a culture shift. It's not like it was before, where it was just party politics... you have people on the left which are totally unhappy with the way Government works, and believe the Government needs a fundamental change. Ask any Democrat what they think about the U.S. Constitution, and the vast majority of them will tell you it's totally outdated and needs to be replaced. While on the other hand, most Republicans will tell you the Constitution is the rock that keeps this country together.

Democrats today want socialism. There no getting around that. They want socialism, and they want absolute compliance with their ideologies.

From my perspective, I feel like the Democrats have gone completely insane.

Those on the left might feel the same way, but other than January 6th (which seems to be everything they talk about), they can't really point to anything other than to say more or less that Republicans are stopping Biden from spending more money than he already is... basically... or not passing rules that allow Democrats to gain even more permanent power (voter laws, etc.).

I wouldn't be all that concerned about defining "left" or "right". Those are categories... generalities... abstractions. In every moment of my consciousness, I strive to adhere to Existentialism, as captured in this quotation which I posted many years ago on OptiBoard (Who doesn't know what that is?) as a Word Of The Day; to wit:

quote
Existentialism is not a philosophy, but a mood embracing a number of disparate philosophies; the differences among them are more basic than the temper which unites them. This temper can be described as a reaction against the static, the abstract, the purely rational, the merely irrational, in favor of the dynamic and concrete, personal involvement and engagement, action, choice and commitment, the distinction between authentic and inauthentic existence, and the actual situation of the existential subject as the starting point of thought. Beyond this the so-called existentialists divide according to their views on such matters as phenomenological analysis, the existential subject, the intersubjective relation between selves, religion, and the implications of existentialism for psychotherapy ...

Insofar as one can define existentialism, it is a movement from the abstract and the general to the particular and the concrete ...

Don't talk about whether someone is or isn't a Leftist. Talk in specificity about what they do or do not intend.
