Yellow ceases operations

quote
Less-than-truckload carrier Yellow Corp. ceased all operations at 12 p.m. Sunday, according to a notice on the gates at its terminals.

Separate internal documents showed the procedures for closing the facilities as well as “talking points” to be used when informing union employees not to show up for their shifts. The documents indicated the company plans to issue a public statement Monday updating “the state of the company and the operation.”

They have been around for a very long time.

Ah man, this really bums me out. I really hate to see companies that have been around FOREVER, just disappear like that. I wonder if this is irreconcilable... sounds like it might be.

I never understood why they were called Yellow, but their vehicles were orange.

They were originally part of Yellow Cab, the taxi company. The orange trucks were for high visibility.

I saw a number of long time carriers go under during the Obama years, too. Obama was very close with James Hoffa, Jimmy's boy.

Without holding back... what do you think the reason for this is? You'd think that with all the shipping and trucking that's going on, there would be a lot of money in this. Is the problem with how shipping is handled now ... e.g., goes in a queue and anyone who's driving that way can pick up work? As opposed to people consigning with a specific trucking company? (No idea, just throwing that out there). Or does it have to do with the constantly fluctuating price of gas.

Unemployment rate for truck drivers dropped from 10% when Obama took office to 4.1% when he left. https://www.zippia.com/truc...r-jobs/demographics/

The guys you knew must have been real losers to go under when the industry was boomimng.

Like most of your posts, this is not even worthy of consideration.

I have been out of the industry for nearly eight years and Yellow is (was?) an LTL carrier while my managerial experience was in the truckload segment, so I could only make some vague suppositions.

I will have to do some reading to get a better handle on what happened to Yellow, but the first article I read is from this “right wing propaganda rag”: (they are probably lying, all the non-rubes know it is Trump's fault)

From the story you linked

In 2020, under the Trump administration, the Treasury Department granted the company a $700 million pandemic-era loan on national security grounds. Last month, a congressional probe concluded that the Treasury and Defense Departments "made missteps" in this decision — and noted that Yellow's "precarious financial position at the time of the loan, and continued struggles, expose taxpayers to a significant risk of loss."

It was simply poor management. thr trucking industry has been growing and thriving for years, but this story claims Yellow has been struggling for a decade. The problem was with the individual company, not the industry.
