What century is this?

Chechnya is banning music that's too fast or slow.

quote
"Musical, vocal and choreographic" works will be limited to a tempo of 80 to 116 beats per minute (BPM) to "conform to the Chechen mentality and sense of rhythm," said Dadayev, according to the Russian state-run news agency TASS.

"Borrowing musical culture from other peoples is inadmissible," Dadayev said, per a translation by The Guardian. "We must bring to the people and to the future of our children the cultural heritage of the Chechen people. This includes the entire spectrum of moral and ethical standards of life for Chechens."

Remember that Chechens were responsible for both the Belsan School massacre and the Boston Marathon bombing.

They should know better.

EDIT: I put in the wrong Adam Neely video. I inadvertently embedded the "short" instead of the full video. Neely is a leftist, but he does know music theory.

Col. Bruce Hampton claimed that cultures from higher altitudes had higher pitched music while cultures from lower altitudes were more about bass/rhythm.

Don't have any clue if there is anything to that.

Not all that far from Chechnya, geographically or culturally, Jordan has a different approach that doesn't require a heavy handed government.

‘We searched for ladies over 70’: on the trail of Jordan’s forgotten folk music

quote
In the Jordanian town of Tafilah, a six-year-old boy softly hummed a song. His family were astonished, and his 82-year-old great-grandmother, Jawaher Al Ahmad, overheard and began to cry. She asked the child who had taught him the “hajini”, or Bedouin folk song, and said: “The last time I heard that song was at my wedding.”
