Marco Rubio (Page 1/1)
williegoat JUL 09, 01:03 PM
I haven't paid much attention to Rubio since the 2016 debates. At that time, I liked him, but thought he lacked the maturity to be president. Vivek Ramaswamy gave me the same impression, in 2020.

Now, Rubio seems to be at the forefront of speculation surrounding Trumps choice for VP.

So, what do you guys think? Although I know exactly what one of our more recalcitrant Floridians will say, I would be particularly interested in the impressions of our members from the Sunshine State.

I dunno, I feel like Marco Rubio just ain't it. Instead of washing off one of the old candidates, I think the Trump campaign needs to reverse-Palin the VP nomination. Hear me out here:

The brilliance of nominating Palin is you had John McCain who was kind of a lukewarm candidate. Everyone knew he was a great guy, but he was middle of the road and nothing was really invigorating or exciting about his campaign until Palin showed up, and hot damn did she yin that guy's yang. I still think it was one of the most brilliant choices we've seen for VP in a long time.

Now you've got the opposite problem. Trump is this powder keg of a candidate, somehow even more so now than he was leading up to 2016. I'm not suggesting a Mike Pence, though I think he was a great choice for the time. I think Biden is all but handing this election to the Republicans by refusing to compromise on his candidacy, but if the Republicans hold off on being greedy they could drive that home easily with a moderate, fresh face as VP.

Just curious, does one need a license to fish like that?
Interesting, the bait drew in one of the bigger recalcitrant species.

But, just like Gilligan and the Skipper, you always know where he will be at the end of the day.

This is tough... I like Marco Rubio and have voted for him every time I see him on the ballot. He's young, and I generally approve of everything he's done... except his pick for VP when he ran in the primaries in 2016. I blame her for the elimination of what was once Bell Labs. Another point worth mentioning... Marco Rubio may be a politician, but he owns a very modest home (which still has a mortgage). It's a simple 4-bedroom home in West Miami. The dude even took out a home equity loan to make improvements. I don't want to sound like an ass here, but he is VERY middle-class... which means that he hasn't profited from the Government... he finally paid off his student loans from Miami, and the dude still has a mortgage on his home. This tells me he's not getting paid under the table by someone... like Pelosi, or Senator Menendez, etc.

Anyway, I think Marco Rubio would be a fantastic pick, but I have my eyes on someone else. I'd really, really like to see Dr. Ben Carson. I absolutely love that guy. I realize he's soft spoken and isn't as aggressive... but he's calm, collected, and brilliant in absolutely everything he's done. Neural surgery was just the thing he decided to hang his hat on, but he's been absolutely successful at every project he was assigned to when he was in charge of HUD.

Rubio is probably an even money bet for VP, but I think he might be getting a little more hype just because Trump is campaigning in Florida and Rubio will be at his speech.

To me Vance seems to be the best choice. He has the perfect populist back story that has roots in rural Kentucky and lower middleclass Ohio. Both states can kind of claim him. Plus Trump has never trashed Vance like he did Rubio in previous Republican primary races.

Like Todd, I also like Rubio however The "political calculus" of him on the ticket with Trump doesn't fit as far as I'm thinking.

Whoever is on the ballot as VP for Trump will need to be a "net positive" in that he / she will help deliver votes nationally.

Florida is off the map for the Demorats now so Rubio isn't really needed to deliver FL votes.

Nationally, I don't know that Rubio has the kind of immediate or sustaining favorable recognition that someone like Ben Carson or a couple of other potentials comparatively have.

The real "kicker" though is that the law actually forbids Rubio and Trump from being on the ballot together, specifically the Constitution bars the president and vice president from residing in the same state. Article II, paragraph 3, states: “The electors … shall vote for two persons, of whom one at least shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves.”

In any event I'm prepared to be surprised.
