Who they are:
quote | Created by WFA in 2019,2 GARM quickly amassed tremendous market power in the advertising industry.3 Among other data points: • WFA members represent roughly 90% of global advertising spend, or almost one trillion dollars annually.4 • GARM includes every major advertising agency holding company in its ranks and includes the world’s largest media buying agency, GroupM, on its Steer Team.5 • GARM’s Steer Team, which acts as a board of directors and is also closely involved in GARM’s day-to-day operations, includes four large corporations (Unilever, Mars, Diageo, and Procter & Gamble) that spend billions annually on advertising.6 • GARM reports to the WFA Executive Committee, which must endorse GARM’s work and includes representatives from AB InBev, L'Oréal, Nestlé, IBM, as well as many more large corporations and household name brands.7 |
|
What they have done:
quote | Although GARM claims not to impact content moderation policies, or the rules that dictate what content can appear online, the Committee’s investigation shows that GARM’s efforts are aimed at removing and defunding certain content and voices, including: GARM directed its members to boycott Twitter after Elon Musk acquired the company. Although Rob Rakowitz, the leader of GARM, denied having done so in his transcribed interview before the Committee, a GARM member documented discussions about the boycott, noting that the company had pulled advertisements from Twitter based on GARM's recommendations. GroupM, a GARM Steer Team member, attempted to pressure Spotify into censoring Joe Rogan due to his views on the COVID-19 vaccine. GroupM even asked Spotify how it could reconcile being a member of GARM with its stance against misinformation and threatened to halt advertising across Spotify if the platform did not take action against Joe Rogan. Unilever, a GARM Steer Team member, sought to have a Trump campaign ad flagged as misinformation, aiming to effectively remove the ad from the platform. Facebook, however, maintains a policy of not fact-checking political candidates to ensure Americans can see speech from elected officials and hold them accountable. GARM's founder criticized this policy of transparency as "honestly reprehensible." GARM documents obtained by the Committee show an anti-conservative bias that permeates GARM's board of directors, known as its Steer Team. When discussing conservative media outlets such as The Daily Wire, Fox News, and Breitbart, employees from GroupM stated that they hated those outlets' ideology and even discussed placing these outlets on GroupM's exclusion lists. |

Still adjusting to living in a world where Republicans are calling for increased federal power, oversight and regulation of corporate spending. I guess 'core tenants' and 'expedient belief structure' are more interchangeable than I thought. Welcome to the era of realignment.
Whatever else it is, this is political hackery of the highest order. The positioning for swelling federal oversight may as well be a pre-amble to the report. Expect the inevitable self-citing of this report as justification for why we need increase federal power.

Okay, let me see if I can understand the right's position on this. Corporations are people too, but they can't have freedom of speech. Their speech has to be regulated by the federal government.
Have I got that right?
Boycotts are just free-market economics but suddenly the right is against all of that. Got to use the federal government to stop them.[This message has been edited by BingB (edited 07-14-2024).]

I think you almost had it.
Corporations are groups of people that have rights that exist as an extension of the rights of the individuals that compose them.
...unless they're pulling funding from Elon or Trump. Then they're a communist censorship cabal and the federal government needs to stop them.
