Flaming River Steering Rack Option!!!!!! (Need help!) (Page 1/2)
4thfiero DEC 10, 11:55 AM
Hey guys, so some of you know that ive been trying to find a good bolt-in solution to replace our old stock steering racks. Rodney's kit is awesome to help get more life out of our stock racks (ive used his stuff) but i fear my actual rack and pinion is worn out, it has a lot of play, especially in the middle where most of the steering takes place. Its getting harder and harder to find a good quality used rack as time progresses, and they dont sell rebuilt racks anymore from local vendors.

Ive been talking to Flaming River about this issue. They kept getting recommended to me by mechanics and custom builders everywhere for their quality racks. I approached them about building a new direct bolt in option for our Fiero's, basically becoming a new source for Fiero guys to go to and order replacement racks without going through the hassle of doing conversion and custom fabrication to get other racks to work... and THANKFULLY they have accepted!!

I would appreciate some help though! Would anyone have any written specs on both the 84-87 racks and the 88 racks? Right now im looking for...

1) The pivot points

2) Mounting points

3) Overall Length of the rack

4) If we need front or rear steer

Im also asking if anyone has a used rack, (both 84-87 and 88) we might be able to mail them so they can do some R&D on it to answer any other questions they have (i dont)

Really appreciate every ones help with this. PM me or respond to this thread if you can help. again thank you!

Do they have a price point?
Do they have a minimum order quantity?
Will they build them one at a time as people order them?

I think you can go look under your car and figure out the answer to #4...

I can check my parts stash this weekend.

They would build this as a custom rack, price would probably be around what they charge for their current manual racks. Once one is built and works. They have a blueprint for more orders and will build them one at a time for people is my understanding, no minimum requirement at this time.

Appreciate you looking Will

Sending them a complete steering rack tierod-to-tierod would be the best bet.

There have been MANY prior attempts to get this done, but they all depended on having enough interest right at that time to do a group buy. Not having to have a group ready to throw down the cash opens up the door to a plethora of small orders like this and dramatically increases the odds that it will actually happen.

I hear you, ive run into that already with other companies about other parts. Seems Flaming River is different so far. I will keep everyone informed on this thread. Let me know if u have the racks Will, if you do ill send you the mailing address.

I got word back from them, they apparently would only like the measurements for right now please as well as some pics. Would someone have the measurements of the racks or be willing to measure for me???

Can anyone measure an 88 Fiero stock steering rack for me and get these specs?

https://www.flamingriver.co.../service/customforms

Click on Custom Front Steer Pinto-Style Manual Rack and Pinion Form (i think thats the closest to a Fiero??) but even if not we can use that. I myself dont have a spare rack to properly measure.

Appreciate your help everyone.

That's a pretty minimal set of specs... there's mounting methods (and a lot of dimensions associated with those), total travel required, pinion angle, etc. They specify the pinion spline, so a custom lower steering shaft will be needed with the rack.

I dunno man, i dont know enough about the engineering of this which is why im asking for help. Im just trying to give them what they are asking for. Then move forward from there
