You could be at top of exhaust stroke...

I stick my finger in the spark plug hole of cylinder #1 to feel pressure start to build on compression stroke.
Then I watch the timing mark on the harmonic balancer and bring it up to 10 degrees BTDC.
Then make sure rotor is pointing at terminal for cylinder #1 in distributor cap.
This will get you running.

...which only works if the outer ring of the harmonic balancer hasn't spun on the hub (due to the rubber "donut" disintegrating). With these cars now being 30+ years old, I believe that failure of the balancer is unfortunately becoming more and more of an issue.

And at the same time he can verify if the timing mark appears to way off TDC and what you are suggesting has happened.
He could even have a timing chain problem, but diagnosis has to be step-by-step.
