We got a gas problem ? (Page 2/2)

Flex Fuel is More then just parts that safely handle E85 but a Sensor that "reads" the Fuel and PCM Programing to adjust Timing etc from 0% to 85% Ethanol.

Most cars since a least the 70's can handle 10% max Ethanol. Look in any owners book. Any more can "eat" fuel system over time but will cause ignition timing and fuel mix from Carb and injection systems often in seconds to minutes. If you reset to run on E85 then can't get it for whatever reason then better have tools etc to set timing and more even time.

Bigger problem for 70's and older cars is Fuel Tanks that Vent directly to the atmosphere that allow Ethanol to pull Water from that air.

An old drag racer drag told me that years back they were adding pure ethanol to their gas to increase the octane numbers. It amounted to maybe 5% but they also added Amyl Acetate to the gas as an exciter that allowed the gas and alcohol to mix. Point is that gasohol was used many years ago

You are correct that E85 is less efficient, but I don't necessarily buy the article and the climate claims. I would say at best, 'more information is needed'. They are talking about the number of acres planted in Corn increased. That could have happened for multiple reasons, and not directly due to any requirements about ethanol in gas.

My Fiero had a steady diet of E10 fuel since new and never had a fuel related issue until about 5 years ago when the original fuel pump finally gave out.

If adding the ethanol to gas in any way cuts down the oil we are buying from the Saudi's or Russians, then I am all for it.

And personally I use E85 to get higher octane. Its a heckuva lot cheaper than finding some race gas.
