What model of radio came in the 1988 Fiero GT? (Page 2/2)

Even when whatever players where new in cars, was a big problem as heat got many tape etc or stolen when parked.
Doesn't matter what, 8-tracks Cassette and CD all are big target for problems and theft. Even under the seat many things "melted" from high heat.
Cassette & 8-track case may look fine but parts in them have problem just sitting w/ temps > 100°F. Then foam, glues, etc fail and player eats the media and user blame the player.
CD's can warp enough to problems too for same reason. Worse in slot feed players used in cars. W/ minor warping Often can insert a disk but can't eject then have to take apart the player.

Thanks! I have that sticker, but now the question is how to interpret it.
According to the RPO code list on the forum, I have:

UM6 ETR AM/FM stereo w/clock, cass, auto rev cass,seek & scan (85-88)

That's a UX1. The one posted by IMSA GT is a UM6.

There was also a UM4 which I believe was 1984-only. Plus several other variants such as the all-pushbutton versions which I don't think they were still using in 1988. Plus the non-cassette (radio only) which I don't think I've ever seen in person. For that matter, there was also a radio-delete version (which also had its own RPO code) which I've never seen either but someone posted a pic here years ago.

Check your RPO code on the sticker on the driver's side inner fender.

the rear-view mirror/internal light controls. It is a slide switch that controls the
volume of the sub. I have this in my 88GT.

This is correct. I'm fairly certain all subwoofer cars came with the equalizer radio, while non-subwoofer 88 GTs came with the non-equalizer.

That's probably mostly true but there are exceptions. Mine has the UX1 equalizer radio but no performance sound.

Or to put it another way: My RPO sticker has UX1 (Eq. Radio) but not UQ6 (Performance sound w/Sub).

Thanks all for the replies. It seems pretty clear that my RPO indicates my 88 GT had the non-EQ version of the tape deck. I see a few of those on ebay, so I'll see if I can get one with a working cassette deck. There are a few reasons I want this.
1. It matches the RPO. I'd like the car to be as 'original' as possible.
2. Nostalgia. I enjoy driving a car that looks/feels/sounds just like it did when i owned it back when it was new. I had an 88GT in 1992.
3. I have some great mix tapes from high school that I'd like to play just for fun.

Even if you find an old one that Ebay claim is working... can go "dead" and often soon because what I posted above.

I pulled a Fiero radio w/o tape etc that worked to save for replacing "dead" tape unit. I know was working before because drove the car was in first. And when installed some months later it failed to even display time when Off w/ I-key On.
Have 2-3 of 90's units and they "died" too w/ various reasons.

This is part of why many use aftermarket units that fit same spot while doesn't have tape/cd but add aux input, maybe Bluetooth, etc.

And that's only 1 part of the story...
1. Likely have speaker problems and all are very cheap to start w/ make GM Bean Counters happy. (Even w/ most cars w/ "Performance Sound.") If still have OE Speakers, Very likely front speakers are "dead" from sunlight rot. But Many aftermarket speakers often hates living in the dash so many replacements have problems too.
Fixing fronts properly are bit hard w/o cutting OE wires etc... replacing rears in the B pillar are much harder and need pulling seats and a lot of trim just to get at them.

2. Your old tapes often have problems too. Have you even tried playing them in last 10 years?
Any Cassette tape can have problems of their own like stretching and degrading. DIY Recording often have more problems on top of that depending how made and equipment used and condition of same.
