It would help to have pictures of the stance of the car and pictures of the top of the strut from inside the wheel well at ride height.

Okay I disassembled the strut and reinstalled it. BTW, the video on youtube, the guy reassembles them wrong with the hat up.
Everything looked fine. The strut worked fine with no sign of damage, the springs appear to be original, though I cant be sure. But, there was plenty of travel. After I took it for a ride and it appeared fine.
My only conclusion is the potholes I have hit are just crazy deep and hard on the suspension, and just maybe I did not tighten the upper bolt on the strut. The latter may have caused the sharp noise I heard.
I also removed those two anvils I was hauling in the back.....just kidding.
So, I will see.
