Inspecting a Getrag (Page 2/3)

Anyone have a difinitive list of what Getrag components are available? And where?

Personally I'm interested in getting a set of new synchros. Anyone know if synchros are available?

Okay I have the Getrag split, there is definitely some metal in the oil, and the diff bearings are shot. Everything else looks very good to me, is there anything in particular I should be looking for? Also how far apart should I take it to inspect everything?

I would flush it with kerosene. Check the race of the output shaft tapered roller bearing for brinelling or general wear. Check the input shaft bearing in the bell housing side of the case for side play. Check gears for chipping. Clean the magnet in the gear side of the case. Getting the input and output shafts out of the case for a closer look requires a hydraulic press and special tools.

When the case halves go back together GM calls for a special sealant part # 1052943 which is still available. I have used Loctite 518 which is the equivalent.

When it is re-assembled run it through all the gears and make sure it shifts easily.

Okay I have one more question for the group.

My bell housing area was covered in oily residue. It looks like some sort of oil mixed with clutch dust. See photo below. I suspect a rear main seal leak which I have already replaced, is there any good way to tell if the input shaft is leaking? Also to check the input shaft for play is it just a matter of wiggling it to see if it moves? If so how much play is normal?

I just checked a used FWD Getrag sitting in the garage. There is a smidge of radial play in the input shaft - maybe 0.002 or so. I also checked a used Muncie 4 speed and a FWD Izuzu. No play in the input shaft on the 4 speed. Izuzu had play - about the same as the Getrag.

About the only way I can think to check the input shaft seal is to set the transmission on it side wit the differential in the air. Then fill it with oil through the driveaxle opening. I'd let it sit for a couple of days and occationally spin the input shaft.

If the input shaft/sleeve/seal are bad, it's a problem. IIRC that part is not available through GM. Maybe someone has got one on a shelf somewhere.

Okay great, thanks for checking for me. I believe Rodney sells a suitable replacement.

I will check mine when I get back to my car on Sunday.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the tip on Rodney having a kit for a replacement input shaft bearing/seal.
