Stuttering engine please help (Page 2/3)

I'm throwing in the towel. It's just getting worse. Did a fuel pressure test today and it pegged the scale of 10 psi so it was at least that...that's the good news.

The next part really sucks. The fitting slipped out of the fuel gauge, and sprayed gas on the coil. I disconnected the distributor wire but forgot the electric harnesses like a doofus and well..I caught my car on fire and had to put out a decent conflagration. Gas, it's no joke.

Now I have about 6 harness/plugs I've partially melted and had to replace a couple runs of emission tubing on the snorkel that I melted. Not to mention the foam insulation around my shift cables and the hole in my corrugated intake. Thankfully it appears I didn't burn through any wires, but I have a ton of splicing and replacing to do now. Poor tach filter harness looks the worst..like a grilled cheese sandwich....but my tach board is fried anyhow so that can wait.

I'm just taking it in tomorrow. I was going to buy another car but I guess I'm paying a tow truck 85 and mechanic 105 diagnosis to deal with it for however much more it is to fix. Take away my man card, I can't fix my car and I'm tired of trying. 🤷‍♂️ Dammit.

Damn man, I'm not trying to rub it in... but I purposely quoted and posted how I checked my duke's fuel pressure so you wouldn't have this type of issue!

Well, I'm glad you at least didn't get injured.

It's alright. I broke the cardinal rule..I was working on something dangerous and distracted by something unrelated. Guy I live with came home in a **** mood and was taking it out on me for no good reason, so I went out and did the test to get away from him...but the whole damn time I was half paying attention to the situation in my head. No amount of previous warning probably would have saved me, I wasn't thinking right.

Well, maybe this revelation will save someone else the misfortune. Anyway, I certainly hope you can get that car sorted out.

Just got the call, the ignition coil I installed (new) is "arcing all over the place" and they said that was the problem. Easy to see why I had a fire I guess. Also replacing one bad part with another bad part no wonder I was at a loss as to why it was running bad.

Anyhow, supposed to be fixed tomorrow and then we'll see if it's actually fixed. $385 lesson on a 35 dollar coil, not to mention shagging down a few new sensor connectors I melted and replacing them over the next few weeks. The NAPA guy, already familiar with my past shenanigans with the distributor wiring, is gonna laugh pretty hard. "You need another one???"

Hopefully, it is fixed... and if it is, then $385 was a heck of a lot cheaper than having to dig further into the engine. Just lookin' for the positive!

Yeah no doubt. I'll know within a few minutes, if I jump on the gas and it sputters I'm taking it right back. Hoping this is it, 385 isn't hateful but knowing I could swap it out for 1/10th that does irk me.

Not sure what to make of no report.

Lol.. it took longer. They said they test drove it and it was still lurching and sputtering. Then they said they wanted to put in new plugs, wires, cap and rotor for the tune of $500 and I told them absolutely not.

Got the parts at O'Reilly's and did it in the parking lot. Runs real good now total for everything after taxes was $460 for parts and the labor they overcharged me for on the coil. That's still better than a 1k for a tuneup and a coil. Ridiculous. Good to go until next time it breaks down.

Thanks for the help Patrick

Just a note to anyone going through this nightmare thread because they have the same problem:

My timing mark was moving around while I was using the light and it was running rough and skipping in gear. The answer is: Distributor cap and rotor button. Or at least it was in this case. Spend the $20 buck and replace them, I probably should have right off and it would have saved me a lot of heartache and a fair amount of money.

Good luck out there folks.
