Kit, I don't quite understand why it is you believe that your EGR solenoid is activating/opening your EGR valve when the engine is idling. That's not how the EGR system is designed to operate.

Just pull the small hose from the top of the EGR valve after you've started the engine (making sure to also plug the hose), and I predict you'll soon see that it makes absolutely no difference in idle speed.

I'd start with going through what was disturbed 1st. I don't know the programming for the 2.8 but have seen manifold vacuum or the lack there of cause the IAC to increase engine speed, if after it warms up and comes down to expected normal it does support the theory of a potential heat type of seal. We used to have a work truck with a stuck open egr valve. It was a 4.3 TBI and wouldn't start worth a hoot, mash the throttle and it would fire up just fine but get below 1500 rpm forget it. We went through 4 map sensors before figuring out 3 were bad and we had other issues to deal with. My Duke behaves as the service manual calls out, with the original ECM after 15 years of not being on the road/power.

Patrick, you were right. I unplugged the vacuum hose that goes to the egr valve (just after starting the car when cold) and it made no difference in the cold idle. Car still fast idles at about 2300 rpm for about 2.5 to 3 minutes before settling back down to about 1200-1300 rpm.

Answering a question someone asked above, I have the FieroStore braided egr tubes on both my Fiero’s. I installed them with new gaskets and tightened them down good. I don’t think that is leaking air.
