I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this... If you want a shorter shifter, find one from an 84. I find it to be the perfect length, as long as you don't mind the increased effort. (I have "select" issues, so...)

I made my own out of aluminum round stock, using one of the lathes in the machine shop I work in and a sphere-turning fixture I built. Going to try and anodize it in my garage soon. Don't remember the thread exactly, but it seems like it was 12mm diameter x medium or fine pitch. A measuring caliper from hobo freight or similar will get you in the neighborhood. Or, I can take mine to work tomorrow and take some thread measurements for you... (Edit) - As others here have mentioned, the thread is indeed M16x1.50.[This message has been edited by CSM842M4 (edited 03-03-2024).]

I think that's cool that you made your own shift knob. I hope you enjoy the feel of changing gears with a round metal shift knob as much as I do.

Thanks, Larryinkc. For me, the deal-maker was that I wasn't finding anything commercially available that floated my boat. I had already turned a round aluminum knob for my VW Fox and love how it looks, feels and works. And the fact that I made it myself just made me feel warm and fuzzy inside. I just reviewed this thread and saw where the OP stated he didn't really want aluminum. It's not for everybody, I suppose. Phils88gt, keep us up to date as your search progresses. Good luck!

A round metal shift knob just feels right to me. Most of my DD cars have been manual floor shift cars. The first mod I make is a 2" polished aluminum shift knob. I wish I had the skills to make my own but I have to buy them. Lucky I found Twisted Shifterz, they have been able make whatever I need.
