That was my thought too... to protect against a belt attack.
... is it only on 88s though? I don't think my 87 has it, and I'm the original "tinkerer" on that car.

The 1984-1988 Pontiac P Part and Illustration Catalog shows the part was for the 1985-1988 2.8L V6
