If he added bunch of extra cats with V bands to swap them out quickly, would you need to run the auto? I thought that as long as the motor was newer than the car it is going into and all the stock emissions equipment is kept, then you are good in cali as long as you pass the rolling smog test. I don't recall there being any limitations with the transmission itself?

I heard the 3800 motors were only offered on automatics from the factory, so it would have to be that way. I think in some thread ages ago, someone tried it. The final killer was something with the gas tank hookups. So ill just do it my way

If you add V-bands to the exhaust system, you are modifying parts related to emissions controls. If you don't believe that a V-band will affect emissions, the burden of proof is on you to prove otherwise. Hence the system of CARB EOs...

Think of the powertrain (engine+transmission) as an emissions generator, rather than just the engine alone.

A manual transmission in the powertrain is an emissions challenge; the driver often makes sudden, unpredictable, throttle pedal changes, such as when making gearchanges. When the airflow changes rapidly, it is hard to maintain a correct AFR. With an automatic transmission, there are less throttle variations, so the car is potentially cleaner.

Consider the transmission as playing a key role in emissions, and that any change to the transmission is assumed to affect emissions, unless proven otherwise.
