I'm thinking of some sort of gantry steel frame setup that is bigger than the car, which can allow a point to move in XYZ axes. Measuring displacements with measuring tapes is probably good enough. You don't need a whole lot of measurement accuracy (probably +/- 0.5 mm is good enough for a lot of things), as much as you need a setup with a large measuring range.
