Adding power windows and door locks to a Fiero (Page 1/3)

What is involved in doing this? What parts do I need to gather from the donor?

The doors from the donor.
It is a lot easier to add the doors with the power accessories to a car, than to add the power accessories to a door.
You will also need the wire harnesses, window switches and surround plate, and door lock relay.
Lock switches and interior door handle surround, if not swapping doors.

OK so I need to find a powered non-aero to swap doors with? I have an 88 Formula and an 87 GT. the GT has powered doors and the formula doesn't. When looking for a donor is aero my only concern? Are the doors the same on all years.

Yes, get the doors. It has been a while since I did this swap, but I seem to remember you will need the "cross car harness" that runs behind the dash. That carries the electrics for this.

Don't worry whether the doors are aero or not, unless you are determined not to change the door panels.

Any 85 through 88 door with power accessories will work. You can easily swap the outer and inner skins (panels) if needed. The 84's have a different way of mounting the outer door skins.

The best way to do this is to remove the two front fenders. Then you can access the four bolts that hold the door frames to the chassis very easily. You can swap out the outside skins on the four doors, so no painting would be required.
This is the top hinge on the passenger side. Notice that the door part of the hinges is threaded from inside the door frame. Not fun to do that way.

ok sorry to revive an old thread, but i need to add the power door locks. my car has power windows, and i have acquired the power door lock setup but have no idea how to install it.

in addition i also have an alarm and remote door lock setup to install.

do i need to install the fiero power door locks and the remote door locks, both or just the latter ?
is there a tutorial on how to install power door lock setup ?

I wrote up the tech article on the Michigan Fiero Club site.


I would not swap doors, as I have tried that and it is more pain than just swapping internals, as you have to align the door and the door panel. If you have a good door on the car, just swap the internals, and add the wiring harness for the interior.

Me either. I added power windows, locks, and mirrors to my 88 Coupe, power locks and mirrors to my 87GT. I've also replaced a door.

I did mine in1989 before the internet and PFF. I had the Helm manual and I used that as my guide. If you are installing power to a non powered you will NEED the cross car harness--the junction block located above fuse box on driver sidewall in the dash area, the window regulators and motors, the lock solenoids, the power lock buttons (get new) the window switches and the plate they go on AND the silver circuit breakers that go in the fuse box. When I got my stuff it was all new from the dealer. I laid it out on the floor to see how it was going to go using the manual as the guide---since you will be using a donor, it would be good to look at the manual to get the wiring out of the donor. I would buy the doors and bring them home and disassemble them there--make note of how the stuff comes out of the donor--I know you all probably know this but I did mine with only a manual--use screws on reassembly-I did rivets and I think they loosened up and while you are doing it you might as well replace your dew wipes and the felt bumpers---hopes this helps some-----Have fun doing it!
