3800 swap coolant overflow. (Page 1/3)
AL87 APR 13, 09:28 PM
okay so 3800 s/c swap. has the stock thermostat housing with bleeder screw.

the vehicle keeps overheating like theres some massive air pocket. the thermostat isn't opening up like it should and I don't know what else could be wrong here.
everything is new. problem persisted before owner serviced the cooling system...

he's using dex-cool and a 180* thermostat.

I believe theres an air pocket somehow getting trapped underneath the thermostat and its not opening to allow flow or something..

Is there a hole drilled in the thermostat flange?

With out using the Fiero housing it is very hard to get all the air out
I had to raise the font end all the way Up with the bleeder open till all the air came out
Then lower the car fill it the rest of the way let it run with the cap off till the thermostat opened and topped it off

Step one is to drain the Dex a cool out and flush it out. Go back with 50/50 green stuff. That doesn't help ur issue now but prevents future issues. Next jack the back of the car up..Pull off thermostat housing then thermostat..then fill engine full of 50/50..put thermosta and housing back on. Next pull off radiator cap and fill hose off thermostat housing till starts coming out radiator...then put cap back on and fill hose till it starts coning out. Once its full put house back on and start car for short period then pull house off and repeat. This will get all air out of the ssystem and car should run cool. If not then start looking at front radiator cap as the last swap I did I had issues with and after several fill ups found the radiator itself was bad cause it would not seal on cap.

I drilled a 1/8 inch hole in the t stat .

Yup

I think it really depends on whether or not this guy has a fill point on his engine for the cooling system. If someone did the swap and didn't add a fill point on his engine - he probably will never be able to fill it properly and get all the air pockets out (without at least removing the thermostat and housing like was mentioned earlier in this thread).

I always install a coolant fill point that ties into the OE 3800 heater core return port (that leads to the water pump) - and have a hose connected to it with a cap positioned so it is at the highest point in the engine bay it can be.

he says that his coolant is always boiling out, he cant figure out what it would be.
he took the old housing off and re worked a fiero thermostat housing, and it seemed to work far better.
but then he is not complaining that no matter what he does its "boiling out the coolant overflow tank"

and I just noticed something on my gt when I topped off my coolant recently.
I just got a new radiator cap on there, and made sure it wasn't leaking, but with the car cold, if I take the thermostat housing cap off and take the thermostat out, and "top off" the coolant until it spills over, out of the housing, the coolant flows down into the overflow tank. out through the radiator cap, that isn't supposed to be possible, right? I just got a new cap as well...
