2.8 Oil dipstick tube (Page 1/2)

Hello all!

1987 GT - 2.8 V6

Last weekend I was getting gas and decided to check my oil. As I pulled the dipstick out, the entire tube pulled out with it. It would seem that I lost the bolt that holds it in place.
I was able to get the tube back in place, but can't seem to figure out where the tube mounts to. I wasn't having much luck with searching, so I was hoping someone might have a V6 pulled out to take a picture.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

There's a black bracket to the side of the valve cover It bolts to it. Check out the link below.

Thanks.

Funny thing is when the tube pulled out, I found the picture that was in that post, but didn't thinking about it when I was trying to search for the mounting point.

I've got the oil dipstick tube removed from my '88 Formula right now as I have the valve covers off while installing 1.6 roller-tip rockers. I looked very closely at my dipstick tube, and it does not have a groove to install an O-ring as referenced here...

I'll double-check tomorrow, but it appears that my tube has a "fake" O-ring which is actually just the metal tube itself shaped to look like it has an O-ring on it. Anyone else noticed this on their oil dipstick tube?

I should add that I've had the oil dipstick tube off my '86 GT, and yes, it does have an actual rubber O-ring.

Parts book says it is a seal, not o ring. gm# 10101944

Picture of part in diagram is garbage. Doesn't look like that.

Even if it is not specifically an o-ring that is what I have used on the 3 or so I have replaced. Try not to go to wal-mart and buy a set on special or anything. It will be in contact with oil constantly and you want it to hold up. Auto stores usually carry them

After cleaning the oil dipstick tube off better and using my glasses , it is now much more apparent that there is indeed a seal/O-ring of some sort on the tube.

Anyone know what size of o-ring you use to replace the oil dipstick tube o-ring with?

Looks like I maybe answering my own question but if someone has a different answer let me know. Went to AutoZone and bought a pack of standard size o-rings the closest size was 1/4" ID x 3/8" OD but it was a little too thin so since the AutoZone I was at didn't have any metric sizes I had to ran to O'Reilly autoparts (who didn't have any standard size o-rings) and picked up a size 10 O-ring I assume that's mm but the clerk only knew it as size 10. anyways it appears to be the right size I'll try and see.

I wrote an article in the NIFE newsletter Fiero Focus a while ago addressing this with photos. I will check what issue and list it here.
