Horn button problems (Page 1/3)

My horn button is possibly bad, but I am not sure I was originally missing the contact and the spring, so I bought one off eBay. If I touch the contact and the steering nut the horn will go off. But I put on the button it will not I adjusted the tabs some nothing. Am I missing another piece. I even took the outer vinyl piece and tried it but could not make the horn go off. It just wouldn't make since for it to go bad. Any ideas here? Also are all horn buttons the same or are other years different?

Which button(s)?
Fiero like other GM cars use several types.
"Sport" Wheels w/ two buttons are grounded thru the screw. Crap screw = Crap grounding = Problems w/ horn.

It the center horn button for the three spoke steering wheel

Round horn buttons are for the three spoke. I believe there's also a rectangular center horn button for a 4-spoke wheel that doesn't use paddles. I found several images on Google Image Search for Fiero Steering Wheels. I couldn't enlarge the image enough to determine if it was the Firebird or Fiero logo on the horn pad.

I looked up on steering column tear down and rebuild it was not clear about the horn, I looked on eBay at different horn buttons most look the same as mine, for some reason mine is not grounding out, I don't know why anyone else have the same horn button?

Did you put those three items in the right order?

If memory serves (always questionable) the spring goes in first. Then place the metal pin in the plastic retainer so that when you install it the metal pin goes in "head" first. Make sure the little locking tab is still in good shape at the bottom of the plastic retainer and once it bottoms out give it a bit of clockwise rotation to lock it into place.

Another thing to check is the contact point on the back of the horn button. Try roughing it up a bit to get good metal to metal contact. You should be able to see where it contacts since there is usually some wear there from years of use.
