Brake wear question for those who have modified to S10 booster, how many miles?? (Page 1/1)
Curtisk1060 MAR 07, 11:25 PM
I made the modification to the larger S10 brake booster almost two years ago on my sons 87GT and the front pads (Wagner MX261 thermoquiets) lasted about 17K miles on mostly city driving. The brakes are awesome since the swap, but I was wondering what others have experienced miles-wise. I don't know if this is typical or not. We also have modified the engine/trans. to the L67 supercharged engine w/ the 4t65EHD automatic transmission..what a blast!! I just installed new pads from Autozone so I will see how they do. One thing that is great is they have the lifetime warranty so I can replace them forever at their cost. Thanks in advance for your responses.. Curtis

Front wearing out that fast then:
Fronts are dragging the pads
rear brakes have problems
combination valve have problems
prop valve in combination valve is set wrong w/ engine/trans.
engine/trans setup and brake setup are not setup to work w/ each other.
Any or all of the above and more.

Booster won't effect pad wear issues.
Booster's MC rod must be set correctly. Too long, MC have problem returning to rest and is Very bad. Too short "just" causes low pedal.

Important note is Auto trans will always put engine load on rear axle when you stop. PCM Trans control does not go neutral to stop. Does go into low gears and exact gear depend what your doing at the time... slow a little or allot, stop short, slow then stop, etc.

The boosters I sell are have the exact same size rod as a Fiero.

I never measured mileage, with a life time warranty I just swap them out every so often. Make sure to "bed in" your new pads, it makes all the difference.
With higher HP people tend to drive faster, where your brakes will wear faster too.

I think you'll find that their warranty only covers failure of parts during normal use, not normal wear because let's face it, brake pads are a wear item like tires and wiper blades. If they replaced them regardless they'd never make a buck!

Anything I might say is probably worth what you paid for it, so treat it accordingly!

Give it a try, you might be surprised. I've turned in worn pads under warranty a few times (not for my Fiero).

It seems to depend on who you ask however. I've been told, yes, the warranty covers wear as long as the wear doesn't point to bad parts elsewhere (such as a dragging caliper). But I've also been told, no, the warranty doesn't cover wear and only covers defects in the pads themselves. So like they say, your mileage may vary. I don't know which is "correct" since I've heard it both ways from Autozone employees.

Same as above on the pad warranty, never had a problem returning them. Using Wagners on all our cars.

Just curious. Does your son drive like he's driving in a F-1 event? Heavy on the brakes maybe? Some of us when younger drove our cars pretty hard when Dad wasn't around. Guilty here, sure was fun👍

I have never had any problems with warranty on brake pads, and the beauty of Autozone is if anyone gives you a hassle, just go to another one.

I've had the modded S10 booster for about 5 years, and have no brake wear issues. Like others mentioned above, I think your brake problem lies elsewhere.

Keep in mind, like high preformance tires vs 40,00 mile tires, it's a question of do they grab or do they last longer. And with brakes you gotta ask, would you rather replace the pads or the rotors?
