EXHAUST TIP SHIELDS (Page 1/1)
QCMANAGER APR 30, 09:33 AM
The metal exhaust tip shields mounted to the underside of the rear fascia are both rusted and discolored beyond hope. I ordered two new ones from the Fiero Store and when they arrived I was surprised to see that they are attached with a two nut/bolt configuration.

Do I have to totally remove the rear fascia to replace these or is there an easier method that anyone has discovered?

Thanks

And thanks to Charles in Georgia for rebuilding my headlight motors with Rodney's metal gears.....they are absolutely smooth and functional now.

I think you can just loosen the back of the wheel well liners and reach the nut/studs.

Yea, you can remove the wheel well liner.
Not super fun to do, definitely more comfortable to take the bumper off, but it can be done

It can be done as well by removing most of the lower bumper retaining rivets. You'll curse a lot and even more when you realize that the replacement shields are just a hair too big to seat in the bumper's recessed area for them. I regretted that purchase.

I am soooo glad I did a lot of reading here before I purchased replacements for my 86. Mine are not rotted just very discolored. I sanded them and cleaned them up instead of replacing them. It sounds like it is a total pain in the ass to remove them and I really just don't want to do all that for "shiney" ones.

Yeah, it's not like they're out in the open in plain view.

Removing the rear fascia is not as bad as it sounds. There are six screws to remove to get the taillights out. The light sockets then twist out easily. then put the light housings aside. Then you remove the side marker light 2 screws twist/pull out the light sockets and the marker light is removed. Once that is done you pull out the license plate lamp sockets then pop/pull out the fasteners above and below that hold the fascia in place. Its only about 30 minutes worth of work and it makes it easy to replace the metal plates above the exhaust tips. The put everything back in the reverse order that it was removed. Maybe that adds 15 minutes to the job.

Right? I mean if they are rotted off, I understand replacing them. Unless the day comes that I already have it all apart for some other reason, I will just stick with my sanded and cleaned up ones.....

I am more focused on replacing the muffler and putting on new exhaust tips while I am at it. I bought a pair of tips from Rodney Dickman and a Flowtech after burner Muffler to replace my crusty, hole infested muffler. Next week my 86 won't sound so bad going down the road.
