Getrag bearing rotation/spin/movement (Page 1/1)

In the process of trying to isolate a leak, seemingly coming from the transmission, my father and I decided to proceed with replacing the axle seals at the same time. Upon replacing the axle seals, we noted little to no rotation/spin/movement in the bearings located just behind the seals (not sure of the actual name) on both sides of the transmission.

Anyone know if a certain degree of resistance expected in these bearings or is this a sign of failure?

Those are the differential carrier bearings and they should not be loose.

Appreciate the quick response, Rick, thanks! Kinda figured that would be the case since it was the same on both sides.

Case closed, readers.

You'll only see those turn when the differential turns, which is when the car is moving. You could pop the trans into gear with the engine idling and watch it turn that way, though. You'll get trans fluid out the axle hole, so it'll be a little messy.

Thanks Will! Appreciate the elaboration.

I think I’ll try to keep the fluid in the transmission for now. 😜
