Water temp gauge 😡 (Page 1/1)

2.8 4 speed I installed a 185 t stat and when driving on the highway temps are at 220 staying there around town climbs up a tad fans come on brings the temp down below 220 but as soon as I start driving it wants to climb right back up to 220. Stays there now I noticed if I use the turn signals, touch the brake pedal, turn the parking lights on, the temp gauge will flicker up or around so that is a dead giveaway that tells me this old 30+ old gauge is on its way out. Does someone rebuild them or make a new resistor etc to make it accurate. I haven’t done the wires switch yet on the sender and the 2 on the back of the cluster of does this usually fix this.

The gauge might be fine. It could be a bad ground (or two)....

Question is which ground or grounds though 🤔 It didn’t do this when I installed the motor about 4 months ago

I’m about to install a auto meter water temp gauge and call it day. I’m just trying to find that water port on the drivers side head like the passenger side where the factory gauge and light sender are at

I would do the "fix" first, as the problem causes the needle to get moved off of calibration. The 220 you are seeing may not be 220. The needle just pops onto a pin on the gauge, and the bouncing caused by the problem can cause the needle to be off. You can test your gauge by using a rheostat or potentiometer to "feed" a known signal to the gauge, and then see what temp the gauge is showing. Easiest to do at the sender, when you are also doing the "fix". Here is a link to a thread that has a table of the resistive values. Use the Pot ( I used the dimmer for the dash lights- had a spare sitting around)., and put that inline with the sender wire , and the other end grounded. Use your Ohmmeter to set a value on the pot ( I like to use 145 ohms (220 degrees on the gauge)- you could even use resistors for this). See what the gauge reads. If it is off, you can pull the gauge, pop the needle off ( very carefully- use a plastic fork), and re-position where it should be. Might take a try or two to get it perfect.

Yup, very likely a ground problem that can be iffy 1 or several grounds.

At minimum clean to bare metal then use brake or silicon grease to prevent "water" damage.

sadly likely has cooling system problems too but do one thing at a time.
