Caliper brake arm: Expected operation and installation (Page 1/1)

We’ve been doing some work on factory brakes to replace some leaking/failed calipers on my 87 GT.

As with most factory brakes, some bolts were rather seized, but we managed to get the calipers off and replace what needed to be replaced. However, we’ve now reached the stage of working with the parking brake. I’ve got all new cables to replace the missing/dead ones, but I have a couple of questions on how the e-brake caliper arms work in conjunction with the calipers.

On the drivers side, when depressing the brake pedal, there is no movement in the e-brake caliper arms, which I presume is normal? This arm seems to be properly threaded through, albeit it seems to be pretty solid and a little corroded.

On the passenger’s side, however, the bolt that the caliper arm attaches to is “sucked into” the caliper. Fewer threads are showing, and the “bolt” that the caliper arm would appear to “connect to” is recessed in the caliper. With the bolt attached the caliper arm tightened up, the arm does not move until the brake pedal is depressed. Once the pedal is depressed, the arm loosens up and can be moved up and down.

In short, I’ve got one caliper arm that seems as though it’s seized on the driver side, and another that seems loose and unable to be properly threaded onto the bolt on the passenger side.

Anyone have any thoughts/insight as to how this works?

Appreciate any insight!

Thanks,

-Chris

Sounds like the driver's side one needs adjusting. Ogre's Cave (link at top of page) has a ton of info and he'll chime in I'm sure.

You can take the lever off (IIRC one side threads the opposite direction than the other) and re-clock it.

Finally, search here for the procedure to adjust the parking brake cable, because the adjuster is counter-intuitive (at least to my intuition) and frustrating inaccurate.
