creaking roof (Page 1/1)

I have an 85 SE without a sunroof. I have an 88 GT with a sunroof. When backing out of a steep driveway, the roof on the 88 kind of "creaks". This occurred on a previous 88 with sunroof too. The 85 without the sunroof does not creak. I know that car bodies can twist a bit, so I'm guessing that the body with a sunroof doesn't have as much stiffness, so it may twist a bit easier.

Just curious if others experience this issue too. If so, is there a way to eliminate it?

Just so you know, the body (under the plastic panels) is exactly the same for sunroof and non-sunroof Fieros.

Yep, my 88 with oem sunroof makes the same noise when I back out of my driveway into the street.
Even with my old age and loss of hearing, it’s very loud. I just figured with a 32 year old car, you are gonna have a few noises. I have had other cars with sunroofs and even t tops, but they never made a loud creak when backing out of my driveway. Go figure.

The noise may be caused by the sunroof glass moving. My 13,000 mile Indy makes this noise as well.

To test the theory, I removed the sunroof, and the noise went away. I have treated the weatherstripping with dressing regularly, and the rubber is supple. I believe that weatherstripping has been flattened over 35 years. A new one might solve the issue.

What do you treat the weatherstripping with (product)?

If I know my Fiero is going to sit for awhile, I usually pop the sunroof handle loose, to relieve pressure on the weatherstripping.

ABSOLUTELY! I always put my sunroof up when I put my baby to bed for the winter.

An excellent tip for anyone with a sunroof.

I used food grade silicone on the gasket to get rid of the noise. CRC makes it. It has nothing in it to deteriorate the sunroof gasket. I removed the glass and liberally sprayed the silicone on a corner of a clean shop rag. I then rubbed the gasket all around with the rag. I repeated the process and re installed the sunroof. It worked for me.

BTW -1, Spraying the rag instead of the gasket reduces silicone overspray. It's difficult to get it completely off of glass and not have a smeary mess.

BTW-2, Isopropyl alcohol will clean it off. It's also good for eliminating the film that builds up on the inside of your car's windows and for cleaning glasses without streaking or smearing.

Weird. My 88 non sunroof does the same thing, it drives me crazy. I've tried to locate the exact spot so I can apply some sound dampeningmaterial like dynonat or foam but don't have it resolved yet.
