Electric mirror troubleshooting (Page 1/1)
cwesty0 AUG 19, 07:42 PM
Hi all. Thanks for the add to the forum first of all. Am having problems with the mirrors on my 85 GT. Not working at all. I have checked all fuses and they are good. Are there any good testing videos out there for a step by step approach? I haven’t pulled the switch at all yet to see if it is even plugged in. Just looking to be pointed in the right direction when I do get to it. Thanks you

See Electrical Section pages 141-0 to 141-2 in Factory Service Manual.
Someone may be able to post those pages from the PDF version of manual.

You might find this troubleshooting thread of use. The Mirror switch is a known problem area. Over the years, drinks, etc get spilled and corrode the contacts ( or they just get nasty on their own). If you are careful, you can dis-assemble the switch and clean it, but expect some broken plastic bits if you do this. Will still go back together.

The thread above looks handy, if short (as it were. Short, electrical question ... oh I crack myself up.) Longer version, here's an FSM:

I *believe* your '85 should be very close or identical to the '87.

Looking at 8A-141-0, yeah, see if you have power to the mirror switch A, which should be a big orange wire. Also verify that the ground on it, B, goes, duh, to the body or the like.

You can see if the mirror switch is bad by unplugging it, and real quick, using speaker wire or the like (ie smaller than Romex ) jumper, say, C (yellow) to hot and E (light green/black) to ground. That should make the driver's mirror move up or down.

Anyway, you get the idea, and 8A-141-1 has more troubleshooting hints.
