I lost all gears, except reverse. (Page 1/1)
Saggy AUG 27, 02:18 PM
Today I left to go to my class. I was on the second turn from my home, and accelerating from the corner, when all the sudden, poof! There goes my gears. I find myself unable to put the car in any gear, in fact the shifter feels almost loose. I pull over to investigate. It still moves into the spot for first, second, third, and fourth, and I can almost feel it touching first, and maybe a little bit of second, but it does not pull the car... but what about reverse? I put it in reverse, and to my surprise I start rolling backwards! I turn on my hazard lights, and drive the car in reverse, onlookers bewildered, as I make it down the street. One block down, round the corner, I see the entrance to the backyard, but oh no! I cannot enter the backyard from this direction! The turn is much too sharp! So I continue down the road, in reverse, and make it to the closest intersection, lucky for me not a car in sight. I do a u-turn, in reverse, and safely pull my Fiero safely into the backyard.

It's the 1984 Fiero SE, 4 cylinder Manuel 4 speed, I would love to get my Fiero back on the road, and any advise you can give me will help.

This is the car, if you were curious.

Are the shift and select cables actually moving the levers on the transmission?
Saggy AUG 27, 02:57 PM
i just check it, and the connection point just under the slave cylinder popped off. I snapped it back on, and i'm back in business. Now i feel like an idiot for driving three blocks in reverse. Is there a pin or something that is supposed to hold it on there?
Patrick AUG 27, 03:03 PM

Well, nothing is supposed to be able to just pop off, so I suspect something's missing. Post a picture of what you're referring to.

Don't feel bad.

When I was in high school a friend picked me up in his old beater car early one morning. The automatic transmission had just failed and he only had reverse so he drove to school in reverse. It was quite a thing to watch as he backed up to a stop sign, put the entire rear of the car into the intersection, looked both ways and then pulled out. He even passed a car along the way!

This is that part, after looking a bit closer, it feels very loose.

I've never had this problem myself... but have a look Here for a possible option.

That looks like a good fix. I imagine i have the bolts i need lying around, so i'll put one together, thank you.

Don't feel bad. I drove my old MG Midget home using the choke cable, when the throttle cable snapped. Lots of fun, but at least it was in a forwardly direction.
