Loss Of Spark (Page 1/1)

Hello everyone 88 GT 5speed was on my way home couple days ago the engine was running real rough I was in 2nd gear going about 30 and the engine wanted to stall and the car was jerking back and forth furiously then started giving me like no power, I pulled in to my neighborhood and put it in neutral and just coasted while I revved the engine a little. Every time I gave it a little gas it would make a muffled pop sound like it was backfiring, pulled up right in front of my house put the handbrake on and the engine started struggling and just completely died, now it won't start. I hear the fuel pump and smell fuel while it cranks so know its getting fuel. checked for spark getting no spark at the plugs. could it be a bad coil, pick up coil, ICM?
I went ahead and bought accel super coil and bought a new AC Delco pickup coil and going to buy a AC Delco ICM. I also saw Accel makes an ignition module or ICM for GM are they any good? Will i need to reGap the plugs for the extra volts I'm getting from the accel coil? I need to get her running asap, my daily driver, and need it to drive to high school and work soon. Thanks for looking and helping.

Take the Accel Super Coil back... unless you want to shorten the life of your new AC Delco ICM. Many reports of that occurring in these forums.

Accel is crap. Return if not opened/installed.

Spark from anything = bad part(s).
Bad plugs, wires, coil, etc.
Worse, Bad plugs or wires will wreck coil etc. replace them if others are bad.

Thank you for the heads up what kinda coil would you use?

What do you think about the MSD Ignition Coil? Thanks for the help

The problem with aftermarket "performance" coils (and I hope I've got the specifics correct) is that they produce a higher secondary voltage (to the plugs) by using a higher current through the primary windings, and it's this higher primary winding current that takes its toll on the ICM.

It was suggested to me years ago Here to use the factory coil from a '92 Buick Roadmaster 5.7 350, which I obtained from a trip to the wreckers. Although from a V8 engine, externally it looks no different than the factory Fiero coil.

Unless your present coil has tested faulty, just leave it be.
