3800SC w/ old A/C (Page 1/1)

Hello to everyone! This is my first post to the forum!
I have an 84 se that I’ll be doing a 3800sc swap on. My car currently has A/C and I’d love to keep it when I do the swap, the 3800 I have was actually out of another Fiero and it has all of the A/C components deleted from it. What I’d like to know is can I use the old compressor from the car with a pulley swap? Has anyone done this? Is there a kit? And what might this require wiring and control wise?

Thanks!

The GTP A/C Compressor uses a serpentine belt pulley/clutch. The Fiero compressor uses a V-belt pulley. At the very least you would have to change the pulley/clutch and the mounting bracket to get everything to line up. I've never done it and always used the 3800 A/C compressor that is a more efficient variable displacement design. As to the feasibility of using the Fiero compressor for this swap,I have doubts about that.

As someone who has gone through this, i strongly suggest using the 3800 compressor and save yourself a bunch of hassle. Just get an adaptor line to tie in the Fiero body to the 3800 compressor. Works great

If I may add, you use the GTP compressor and fitting on one end of a new hose and the Fiero connector that attaches near the firewall on the other end. Use the right size O-rings and seals and you are good to evacuate and recharge. This does work well and provides more efficient cooling. My setup shoots out ice cold air on the warmest days. Even if you could adapt the Fiero compressor its not the best idea reusing the 30+ yr old compressor.

Thanks for the replies, good info. The GTP A/C is controlled through the pcm, so how would the Fiero controls work with that? The main thing that makes me think of using the old compressor with a pulley/clutch change is that on my 3800 the A/C controls are deleted from the wiring harness. So the old compressor could be kind of “stand alone” with its own controls.

Does somebody make a GTP compressor adapter for the A/C lines?

Please do a search- this has been covered many times. If you search under my user name (about a year ago) I went through this and several members provided great info. A friend of mine replaced the Fiero compressor with the GTP compressor on the 3800 motor in my car, and the wiring was simple and fast.

Info on the hose is also listed if you search. Definitely the way to go
