Squeaky sunroof seal (Page 1/1)

Stock 87 GT. Having an issue with a really squeaky sunroof. Sounds like it’s the glass rubbing the weatherstripping. I read somewhere on here that rubbing the stripping with silicone lubricant would help. Can someone recommend a brand or specific type that can be used. I don’t want to damage the weatherstripping with an incompatible type (if there is such a thing).

Are you sure it's the sunroof? The glass should not be moving on the weatherstrip. The drip rails will squeak when the body flexes a bit. They can be removed and cleaned.

I think it’s the glass. While I’m driving and sunroof is squeaking, I can push up on the glass with my hand and the squeaking stops. So thus the reason I thought I should put some lubricant on the seal. If someone has a better idea of what to do, I’d sure like to hear it.

I use food grade silicone on the gasket to get rid of the noise. CRC makes it. It has nothing in it to deteriorate the sunroof gasket. I remove the glass and liberally spray the silicone on a corner of a clean shop rag. I then rub the gasket all around with the rag. I repeat the process and re-install the sunroof. It works for me.

BTW -1, Spraying the rag instead of the gasket reduces silicone overspray. It's difficult to get it completely off of glass and not have a smeary mess.

BTW-2, Isopropyl alcohol will clean silicone off. It's also good for eliminating the film that builds up on the inside of your car's windows and for cleaning sunglasses, reading glasses, and electronic screens without without streaking or smearing. Keep it off of rubberised plastic paint that you see in some cars.

Just put ArmorAll on it. Done. I've used it on every door seal in every car I've ever had, because I absolutely hate squeaks in my car. :0

It also keeps your door seals from freezing to the door frame in cold weather.

Baby powder fixes the squeeks and identifies if leaks not all shiny like silicone but doesn't make everything stick either.

Look at the tabs that insert into the front of the opening. They should have a rubberized plastic coating. There should also be a small plastic insert in the slots in the roof. If either the coating or the plastic pieces are missing, you can get a squeak.

Castor Oil rubbed on the seal will help to clean it and will swell the rubber slightly, offering a better seal, especially if it leaks. In the first month, apply it at 2 week intervals, then about once ever month or two. After application, rub off the excess. It won't harm the rubber like some of the cleaners do. Personally, I wouldn't use any form of silicone around an automobile.
