Wiring for aux gauge retrofit (Page 1/1)
pmbrunelle SEP 07, 01:46 PM
I want to install aftermarket gauges in an aux gauge pod on my 1985 Fiero.

I need to pass wiring from the pod down the radio area.

What is the correct / best way to do this? I haven't seen a factory 86-88 V6 car to see how it's done. Do I need to cut holes somewhere?

I'm not sure if this is true for the '85, but the '86-up Fieros all have aux gauge wiring in the harness, even if the car doesn't have the gauges. The wiring (if your car has it) is probably lurking behind the HVAC control panel.

That said, I can't remember how the wiring is routed up to the gauges. I'm sure somebody here can help with that.

I'm installing aftermarket gauges with their own wiring, so I don't need to worry about the Fiero wiring.

Yes, my question is focuses on the best physical wire routing / path, to avoid chafing/pinching, and to make assembly/disassembly as easy as it's supposed to be.

Yup, I looked at that article; it was helpful. However, it shows the wires on the left side of the vents, possibly squished by the center dash surround:

I would be surprised if that's how it's supposed to be done.

Picture from manual posted above shows hole in dash below Gauges.
That's how my GT dash is and what I did on my Indy.

Cars that came with the gauges had a hole cut in the "nose" of the dash, below the vents, and (IIRC) behind the gauge pod. Probably a 1" by 3/4" hole. Large enough to fit the flat gauge connector through.
The stock (unused) connector was square in shape, and usually clipped to the left front edge of the radio pod, just above/behind the console. The gauge harness was plugged into that connector.

This is the solution I came up with.

I cut a notch into the front of the skeleton and steel reinforcing piece. A small wire bundle will be able to pass here.

I'm going to use a bunch of huge connectors that can't be passed through a closed hole of reasonable size, so a passage that is open on one side turned out to be a better idea. I just have to remove the HVAC control head to insert/remove the wire harness.

The wires will run over the vents, then drop down into the passage.

When I added the auxiliary gauges to my 85GT I just spliced in wires at the speedometer gauge cluster and used the later radio console surround. No drilling was required as the 86-88 console has a large opening at the top. It was long ago and I may have also had the auxiliary gauge wiring harness.

The wire routing I proposed in my previous post worked. I was able to install the faceplate with the vents, though I did file the corner of the vent protrusion to increase clearance slightly.

I used Tesa tape (PN 51036) to wrap the harness, for two reasons:
1. Helps the harness to maintain the bends I did.
2. Protects against friction from sharp edges.
