Rear main seal leak? (Page 1/1)

What do you think? Picture is oil pain gasket next to the fly wheel.

Look under the distributor to see if it's leaking from the O-ring there.
When it's leaking there it works its way down the back of the engine.



It's a reasonably easy fix. MUCH easier than rear main seal. Whew!!

When going through all that trouble, replace with a Viton O-ring.

The car is a 3.4 with DIS, would that make a difference?

Checked around the distributor hole, little dirt and grease, but no fresh oil.

Could also be a leak from the cam seal located directly above (about 3-5” above) the main seal. Can’t remember if the flywheel needs to come off for the cam seal fix, but the trans has to come off for sure. If you do the main you might as well do the cam seal while there.

Here's a typical cam cover plate leaker. Like stated, the cover plate is the one with three bolts above the crank.
