88 Ball Joint Shaft fitting into Knuckle To Far: Worn knuckle? Bad Aftermarket Parts? (Page 1/1)
reinhart SEP 18, 06:05 PM
I had a ball joint that was clunking around. I got around to replacing it and noticed the replacement (Rock Auto) ball joint shaft goes in way too far into the spindle/knuckle such that I needed to put a shim (a nut) between the bolt and the castle nut so that I could use the cotter pin to lock the nut on. In other words the shaft is going in an extra quarter-inch deeper into the knuckle hole than it should. I tried another brand ball joint later and it's fitting the same way. Did the hole get worn bigger in my knuckle or are these two aftermarket brands just not fitting right?

For starters, I would of bought them from Rodney Dickman, or the fiero store.

The 84-87 ball joints aren't the same as 88s.
Post a few pics, as its hard to say without looking.

Any helpful replies? Maybe someone that's encountered this before?

Bump.

It really sounds like your original Ball Joint was loose and wore the taper too big- so now the new BJ won't fit....Maybe try measuring the taper hole in your spindle at both ends and post those numbers and someone with a spare can compare them.

That's kinda what I was thinking it could be but have never read of that happening to anyone else so thought I might be crazy. I'll look into measuring next time I'm working on the front end.

If it is worn bigger, are there ball joint sleeves that I can put inside the spindle hole between it and the ball joint? I know 88 BJs are fairly unique so I doubt there's oversized ball joints out there so I'm guessing if there isn't a sleeve, I'd need a new spindle?

I was envisioning something like this but with our dimensions:

I curbed my car hard enough to bend the lower ball joint shank and oval the tapered hole in the knuckle. I had to replace both.
