84 fiero with AC - Cooling Fan Relay discontinued - other known Fix? (Page 1/1)
DimeMachine SEP 19, 04:25 PM
Anyone done this recently.

An older fellow I know has an 84 with what he believes is a bad cooling fan relay. Looks like the part is discontinued.

I would like to help him out but dont want to make an all day project out of it. Anyone gone thru this recently that would like to share their solution. Sounds like the AC no longer works so fixing the cooling fan is all he is after.

Thanks,
Dime

Relays are a common part and can be bought at any auto parts store. GM has discontinued almost everthing for the Fiero. Most relays have a diagram stamped in to the cover that tells you the coil contacts and NO and NC contacts. You might have to make your own harness to get things to work but it is not hard to do. If the new relay has the same diagram as the old one, it is just plug and play.

Get 2 standard car relays and sockets and
See my Cave, Rad Fan

Be aware that rad fan draws enough amps that will cause problems or a fire if you do a crap job.
Plus the Large Red wire is On 24/7 and fusible link won't blow unless sees a "dead short" to frame.
Make sure both relay have plug end down when mounted like AC FP etc relays in engine bay or will have "water" in them and likely very soon causing same.

Thanks for the info gents.

b/t/w You are not kidding about installing the relay and mounting it the correct way so It also acts as its own umbrella. Mounted one wrong back in 1990 and it lasted about a week until the first drive in the rain took it out. LESSON LEARNED!

Also Assume the new relays are in same area...
Put Silicone or Brake grease in the sockets etc sim to engine bay relays. (AC etc relays have "bulb grease" and very messy to work w/ but can use it too.)

The front area around HL will get wet and rot socket contacts even installed right w/o this.
Even take contact out of socket 1 at a time to grease them better.
