New rear hub really tight (Page 1/1)

I did some searching on here and couldn't find what I am looking for. I put on new rear hubs on to an '86 and rebuilt my axles and then put it all back together. I got new axle bolts as well. The driver's side works fine and runs freely but the passenger dies is very tight. I did not over tighten the nut I don't think and I made sure it was all lined up internally before I tightened down the nut. I looked in the Hayne's manual and saw 100 ftlbs so di that on driver's side but I don't think I am even that high on passenger side.

I have looked on both sides of the hubs as best I can without taking the nut off and pulling everything apart again and it "looks" OK?

Any ideas on what might be binding or maybe I have a duff hub bearing? Any ideas appreciated.

Cheers

Haynes is a Total Rag not worth buying let alone using it. worse for many specs including axle torque.

New axle nuts need ~ 180ft/lb Minimum.
See my Cave, Axle

100 ft/lb isn't tight and you should easy rotate the wheel.
Something is way wrong and must find before to try to drive.

You state that you rebuilt your axles?? What did you do to rebuild them? When hubs are properly installed you should be able to easily rotate the tires while both rear wheels are off the ground with car in neutral of course.

If you swapped in a replacement axle, very good chance the seal surface could be different and interfering with the rear seal. Could also be the geometry of the CV housing, pinched seal, ABS ring installed, etc... Loosen the nut a couple of turns and rotate the axle/rotor and check for the source of binding. I would start looking on the backside of the knuckle.

Thanks folks and I agree with all points.

When I rebuilt the axles I took them apart and new grease, checking wear etc. and new boots etc. However, when I installed, the driver's side works fine and the passenger side really tight so was going to start with loosening the nut to see if the binding reduces and if so, then pull the hub off again and see if I have a misaligned seal or something else going on. If all that works then I am into a new hub I think. Looks like I will be pulling the hub off though to have a closer look regardless.....

Again, appreciate all the answers. Will update as I find more.

I know I'm not the only one that's beaten a dead horse "Hayne's manual" but it could have better use in a Porta-Potti at a car show. Makes me wonder where they get their information from.

Worse, is Not the only rag... Chilton books isn't any better and they make books to sell to auto shops for Decades. Both isn't even good toilet paper.

Can get most FSM often including new legal copies from Helms etc. or used on Ebay.
or for GM Ford and a few others can pay for AllDataDIY that gets data direct from Car Makers for less money.

Guys, the spec for the axle nut is 74ft/lbs off the ground, and 200ft/lbs final torque with vehicle weight on the wheel.

Do NOT use an impact on this nut. Only taking it off.

HTH,

I've use the impact wrench on axles nuts for installation and tightening and have experienced no ill effects but the final turn is done with a long torque wrench.
