Fierostore performance vented rotor package for 1986 (Page 1/1)

Not the place for bashing any store that supplies us with much needed Fiero parts, but thinking about purchasing the Fiero store performance vented rotor package (looks like the grande am up grade without the fuss). Has anyone used their brake package? Thoughts?

Is a complete rip off and con job and dangerous.
And you guess correct... Is "only" ~ 1/2 of GA "upgrade" pushes by fools claiming "best thing since slice bread was invented" to Fiero.
I cover this in my cave to highlight some big issues in Brake Upgrade but page is not everything wrong.

Is as bad or Worse than many just put front calipers even w/o whatever fake "upgrade" on the rear axle to eliminate Park/Emergency Brakes that's completely illegal for street vehicles in most places whether or not can easily find your local laws/rules and every place you drive in/thru.

watch now as one or more users or even TFS itself will post claiming many things w/o real proof how that is safe etc. by bolting on brakes made for other cars and a hack job for the rear.

Thanks Ogre! I'm not racing my car, just Sunday driving and the occasional spirited driving. So, I have only replaced the MC, put threaded steel brake lines where there were rubber ones, and the bigger brake booster to help pedal feel. Other than that it is stock. I've read all of your stuff and read the counter arguments and don't want to open that can of worms, so I guess, I will keep it stock. If I ever drop in a 3800, etc, then look at corvette brakes or whatever. Seems like these kind of upgrades are for people that actual take their cars on the track. It's too bad that someone didn't design an upgrade that was guaranteed safer and intended for that vehicle ... like Willwood or something...
Cheers,

Buy good pads like Wagner Thermo Quiet and other Premium pads. Not cheap pad whatever sells. Although even they are likely better than the OE pads.

SS hoses at the wheels are often BS at best.
See http://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/129208.html
If/when you see problems, buy newer rubber hose that meets and label w/ SAE J1401.

Orge!

What do you think of the SS brake lines (not the hoses) that TFS sells?

I'm told this are made by Inline Tube that makes a lot of them for many vehicles. Also make Fuel and other lines too. (many of those are out of stock for Fiero.) Don't see any problem for most users...

Hard lines of any materiel normal bending before and at install time doesn't case a problem. Bending too much or After install should be avoided as much as possible as they get work harden. Bending and Hydro Pressure inside does this for brake, clutch and fuel lines. More so w/ brake lines reaching 1000+ psi when you panic stop.

SS and coated lines won't rust like OE Fiero brake hard lines.
But... SS hard lines and the car itself can still "rust" when exposed to high road salt etc. when they hit each other. Same reason SS coolant lines rot where bottom supports hit them. "Weaker" steel isn't always only thing that dies here. Dissimilar Metal Rot known as Galvanic corrosion often seen in/on boats, steel bleeders in aluminum brakes, etc. Worse if you have electrical problems too like Iffy Grounds. If you live up north and install them, treat the body w/ anti rust and let it dry/cure before you install.

Hard lines won't move or things pull on them like wheel hoses get and often and is part of why OE hoses are made the way you see w/ proper support and locking caliper end covered in thread above. Normally, Hard lines should have all OE support points used but many are missing plastic clips to front tire wall... Right brake line won't break quick but won't like that either. Missing clips under the car allowing line hanging is a target for road crap beating the hell out of them or just 1 big enough to cut/crush it.

IMO, the best brake upgrade for the money and effort required to install it is an S-10 brake booster on a Fiero master cylinder (get the Rodney Dickman Extension for the actuator and a new check valve), new Wagner thermo-quiet (TQ) pads, and new or freshly machined rotors. For me the difference was significant. So good in fact that I've never installed the Grand-Am vented rotor upgrade. (Plus, I read Orgre's comments on brake system changes in his cave. That alone was enough to make me think seriously about change the system for the car.)

Did the same mechanicals as above and included stainless braided FS brake hoses. Brakes are nice for normal or spirited driving. Pretty much took the advice of many on the forum. THANKS to all !!
