Aftermarket fuel injection for Chevy V8 swap (Page 1/3)
RWB 87 GT SEP 23, 01:28 PM
I have an 87 Gt with a Chevy 350 V8 and factory TPI from a 91 Camaro. I am not satisfied with the drivability of the car even when fully warmed up (210F). My question is; has anyone on this forum installed an aftermarket EFI system like Fi-Tech, Holley or Edelbrock? The cost for the Fi-Tech conversion is less than $100.00 more compared to the 4V carburetor alternative due the need for a fuel pressure regulator. TIA, DP

I have used the Holley Dominator on a 5.3 engine, with the premade harness it was plug and play, and it was running in less than an hour. This was on a test stand, but it is super easy to set up. You configure the setup on your laptop and upload, it self tunes fuel, spark advance is up to you, but it easy to set on the graph.

Before I spent a ton of money for a new FI system, I would want to know what is wrong with the current one. Have you run any diagnostics (codes) or have you looked at the actual running conditions via ALDL and your laptop? TPI is very finicky for vacuum leaks, and it is very hard to get the runners sealed without a dab of RTV on the gaskets. A bad sensor can also cause troubles, as can a low fuel pressure. A little time researching the problem can potentially save you a bunch of money. It took me a while to dial mine in, but I haven't touched it now in probably 7 years.

Thanks guys for the reply's. Darby I have spent a lot of time researching TPI issues on the 3rd gen Camaro forums. I just did a complete valve job and all the intake gaskets are new and tight. All the sensors have been replaced in the past 3 months (IAT, coolant (2), MAP and TPS). I plan to look at the HEI system next. I may need a new Eprom burned but the camshaft specs are unknown so that is currently a barrier. One challenge is I have a hybrid; 1970's 350 block with 80's or 90's Camaro 305 heads and a 1991 vintage TPI system.

Thanks again, any and all input is appreciated. DP

TPI is not an LT1, and there is not an optispark system on TPI engines from the factory. The TPI spark works in the same fashion as the Fiero V6, with computer commanded advance to the ICM on a pretty standard HEI-like distributer.

Yes my error FWB, it is just a GM HEI system. Time to break out the multi-meter. DP

do you know the ECM PN you have? MAF or MAP?
There are much more flexible option for tuning out there on the factory GM ECMs

I bought a Fitech Fuel injection for my V8 350 with Vortec heads, about a year ago. Still new in box, but am doing a bunch of upgrades on the car, not just engine stuff, so it will be a while before I can give you real world experience.

I notice that some are going with aftermarket ECM's that cost $1-$3K but I doubt that anything can be done with them that can't be done with the earlier ECM/PCM's that are easily tuned and also provide diagnostic info. With the aftermarket units there are few if any that can shift an automatic transmission so what is the attraction?

My car is MAP based control. I tested both the ignition module and coil. Chilton's 3rd gen. Camaro manual says my old coil is bad, I put a new one in ($40.00 at O'Reilly) and the car seems to run better. Then I checked the fuel pressure and it was only 41 psi so I jacked it to 44 which is the recommended mid point for 19 lb. injectors on a 350 with 260 crank horsepower. Tomorrow I plan to take a long test drive and see how the car performs. DP
