1988 Mera Suspension Issues (Page 1/2)

Suspension issues 1988 MERA. Original MERA too low. Cant drive on NY Roads. Keeps bottoming out. I changed all of the Sway Bar Bushings front at rear. Shocks are good too. Removed lowering springs. Inserted original 1988 Springs. Body sat too high. Removed and cut them to same size height as the lowering springs however the lowering springs are much tighter. Original springs have more space between each spring (Sprint Rate Higher) It still sits way too high - no difference since they were cut. I took off one ring. Trying to find a happy medium. Anything look wrong here? I used the longer front sway bar bushings as recommended. Thanks JR

Is it me or does it look like the sway bar bolt will hit what ever is above it if the suspension is loaded??

That's the upper A arm above it I think so it will move with the suspension so no, it should not hit.

When replacing springs did you tighten A arm bolts with suspension loaded or drooping. If drooping, the torsional twist in the mounts when they become loaded as the car is lowered onto the suspension can cause the car to sit higher than it would. A arm bolts should be tightened with the suspension in the loaded position so the spring is doing all the work.

Anything I might say is probably worth what you paid for it, so treat it accordingly!

Did not know that... I'll have to revisit that. Upper, lower, or both?/

I removed the Shock, Sway bar bushing, and the upper bolt on the hub assembly with a jack under the "A" arm. Lowering the jack allowed the hub assembly to drop low enough to get the spring out and replaced it after I cut it. I never touched the "A" arm bolts. Should I remove the wheel. Jack up the "A" arm and tighten the bolt?

With different springs, my thought would be to loosen both upper and lower bolts so both A arms are free to rotate, get everything under load so that the suspension is where you want it to be with jacks say, the tighten the bolts.
That way you know there's no torsional force coming from the bushings that would affect the ride height.

That's pretty much what I dd when I replaced all my suspension bushings.

Make sure that the spring is seated correctly, at the top. If it isn't, it'll hold the car up to about the same height as a spring with one more coil than it really has.
I can't speak to the Mera, but in this pic, the car has had exactly one coil removed from the stock front springs. 88.

One thing some people make a mistake with is the Coil end must seat in the end of the groove in the lower arm...If not it will ride higher.

I use stock springs plus a Rodney Dickman 0.5" lowering ball joint along with the stock tire size (265 x 50 x 15) and it looks decent or better.
