Auto Transmission drain & fill - Capacity (Page 1/1)

Hey guys,

Dropped the pan & filter this morning. Measuring the old fluid in an old Mobil 1 bottle, it reads almost 4 quarts.

Owner's manual says drain & refill capacity is 4 quarts. Dumped in a gallon of Dexron VI and took it for a drive. Admittedly, 1.3 miles probably isn't enough to get the transmission very hot, but the dipstick is reading well below the hashmarks. Will the level raise that much with more heat? Was tempted to add more, but thought I better ask some folks that have experience with this transmission.

What say you?

Likely was low before you drain.
Add more until stick say full w/ trans and engine is Hot.

Pan dropping uses ~ 4 but Auto trans in Fiero uses ~ 9 quarts total. That can expand a lot as oil heats up.

If cold, add only a little to keep trans Not sucking air then drive to heat the trans. Best is City driving. Highway can keep TC Locked and make it hard to heat.

Engine hot too? Trans "cooling" in heat exchanger in the radiator for a reason... Engine Heat Will Heat the trans oil in cool/cold weather so trans reach normal temps.
