Stuck lug nut... Drill bolt? (Page 1/2)

So I replaced the rotor and brake pads on the passenger side, but when I wanted to do the driver's side, one of the lug nuts would not come off and is now almost round. Are there any easy things I can try to remove it? Mind you, I don't have a garage so all this is done at the side of the road. I do have a long extension cord that will reach my car so I was thinking of maybe drilling into the bolt since I'm going to replace the rotor anyway. Will that work?

I ordered a nut extractor set:

Will try that first.

Most hardware stores (over here) carry these?

Yes, we have those here too but for some reason they are really, really expensive here.

I read that when confronted with a locking lug nut, some theives will slacken (without completely removing) the regular lug nuts.

Then, they will rock the car back and forth; the stud will then break, having to hold the wheel in place all on its own. The other (loosely attached) lug nuts serve to prevent the wheel from falling off completely.

I've never tried this. You may want to research further before attempting this idea...

There is a device called a nut splitter. I found some on Amazon $ 7 to $ 15, plus shipping. I would imagine auto or tool suppliers in your country sell them

Interesting! I'll certainly keep that in mind. I'll try the nut extractor first and if that doesn't work, I might give this a try. Unless there are people here that can think of a reason it's a bad idea. 😁

Yes, that would work if there was actually space for them. But since the lug nuts are recessed in the rims, there isn't...

Sorry, I didn’t think about that. My choice for removing any rusted/rounded nut or bolt is a Dremel Tool along with their cutting wheels. I am sure that they are sold in your country as Bosch bought them a few years ago. There may be “knock offs” that provide the same functionality ... fast and very accurate cutting. I have used it for a thousand different jobs. I even used it to cut off the very small screw/bolt studs on my 88 rear wing, talk about detailed cutting.

Yes, I have a Dremel. If all else fails, I'll try that. 🙂
