New sending unit... still issues (Page 1/1)

Hey gang a bit stumped here. So, mechanic put in a new sending unit and fuel pump in my 1986 2M6. Filled gas tank and fuel gauge was reading full, finally looking good, drove all over place and things continued well. Fast forward three days driving, still reading half a tank.... I ran out of gas, before I realized needle was not moving below half full..... walked to the garage, jerry can and some gas in car, back on road....
I’m thinking either New sending unit I just bought from The Fiero Store was bad, or the float is catching up inside the tank, stuck at half full. Any thoughts? A little frustrated, cause it cost me a pretty penny to get mechanic to replace this and it ain’t fixed... ugh.

Time for the mechanic to recheck his work.

I recall reading an article about the restoration float mechanism hitting the wall of the fuel tank. I will check to see if I saved it.

Yes, if you purchased the Fiero store unit that has shown to hit the baffles of the tank. The best way to fix this is take the entire tank out of the car, this will allow you to move the tank around with a multimeter hooked up to your sender. Check to see what you it reads with the tank upside down then again with it normal. The values should go between 0-90ohms. If they are stopping around 45 it means the float is hitting the baffles of you tank. This will require you to bend the float some and then remeasure. Trial and error.

Thanks for the feedback! Hugely helpful.

This issue should be addressed to every fiero owner that purchases this new sending unit from the fiero store.

Too many folks are installing this sending unit and are having problems.

Should mention to be slightly adjusted for perfect clearance.

Not fun to install a new part that needs to be removed for 2nd time for clearance.

...especially when it involves the need to drop the fuel tank, again. Not a fun job.

Just an update, on the new sending unit from Fiero Store. My mechanic pulled the tank adjusted the sending unit so it would no longer get caught up in the baffles.... Mechanic was awesome, didn’t charge me for pulling tank off a second time (big shout out to Jenner Chevrolet Buick GMC, Island highway, Vancouver Island). In the mean time I asked Fiero store what the skinny was on the damn sending units. They told me it’s not the sending it’s fault, it because of imperfections in our Fiero’s gas tanks that are the problem (tanks get old and baffles warp, etc).. The Fiero Store answer to that They provide a note for the customers to bend the unit to make it fit. I asked where this brilliant fix is indicated... it’s on a sheet of paper with the packing slip. My mechanic never saw this, and I didn’t even realize this was a thing, until I got on this forums to see what the heck is going on.
I wasn’t impressed by the Fiero store telling me it’s the fault of the old gas tank, not their sending unit. seems to me an aftermarket part should be already reshaped so as to not get hung up in the gas tank’s baffles. If you know this is an issue, why not simply change the angle and/or location of the arm so as not to get this problem since it is well known. I am happy to buy parts from them, but not if cheap shortcuts like this are the norm. Sorry to vent, but seriously what were they thinking.
