RADIO STATIC (Page 1/1)

I've got an '87 GT with an aftermarket Pontiac Monsoon radio. The FM stations come in very clear but anything in the AM band is over powered by static. Any ideas as to why just the AM is effected by this irritating noise ?
Thanks for helping.

Static/noise on the AM band is typically caused by electrical arcing. You can try to eliminate the source, which is usually the high voltage side of the ignition (ie: distributor cap and/or spark plug wires) if it rises and falls in pitch with the engine speed. Note there is a wide shield with a connected wire on the underside of the engine cover that should be attached to the body near the driver's side hinge. It can also be caused by some non factory accessories.

The other option is to attempt to suppress it. That can be done by filters on one or both of the Monsoon's battery wires, as well as strongly grounding the stereo's metal case to the body. If there is an external audio amplifier, both it and the Monsoon should be grounded to the same body location.

Try the radio with the engine turned off to rule out the running vehicle causing the issue. See if that makes a difference. If not, you can try an inline antenna filter.

Most old GM "radios" have at lest 1 large cap to filter power in them and this cap can die and doesn't nothing most times and AM just hear noise.

85-87 have a ground plane on inside of deck lid w/ wire to car. No wire, no ground, and anything AM can hear noise. If you drive near E-noise, ECM can barf even setting bogus codes w/o that ground plate and wire working.

AM you hear the noise... Everything else is FM or "Digital" Radio so you don't hear noise but often see less or no bars etc. because all radios still deal w/ E-noise.

Could try AM radio on w/ engine off and may work better but often doesn't help to tell what is wrong w/ your car.
Most Fiero owners has 1 of 2 above problems. Many have both and often more like iffy heat blower and other motors and wires to them.

Plus If Antenna wire(s) have any problem you often get AM noise. Anything that needs cable adapters can more problems here.

Thank you all for the knowledge. It's so nice to have pros. respond to our, to you, "you've should have known that" kind of questions. Problem solved, radio antenna connection wasn't
tight at fender antenna lead.

Always start with the simple and work from there.

I'm sure some people have replaced an engine when all they needed was new battery cables.
