Do I need new springs too? (Page 1/1)

Hey Gang:
Probably a stupid question.... But I'll ask anyway. For my 1986, 2M6, I am gonna replace suspension next. Thinking probably just stock,... I was looking up in Rock Auto and TFS, and saw rear structs, but no listing for the coils springs??? Anybody know where you get these? Can I use the old ones or should I replaces springs as well? My thoughts are that I should probably replace struts and springs? Any suggestions?
Thanks!

It’s not a stupid question. There really shouldn’t be a need to replace springs unless something was wrong with them, surface rust is fine. The only thing I have seen being a problem with springs (not necessarily on this car but in general) is that springs can crack in two pieces, or if the they have been cut or torched to lower the car. As far as I know, there are no replacement springs for the Fiero other than used ones. I think the only parts that you can buy are the strut itself, the upper mount (where the strut bolts to, but not the part with the three studs that bolt to the chassis so you have to save that), bump stops, and spring isolators/pads. Also, you can buy a coilover kit for the rear from FieroGuru and you can adjust the desired ride height with them. That kit will have completely new springs, you just have to select the spring rate you need, and for these coilovers you do not need to save that upper strut piece I mentioned earlier with the three studs, since he welds the studs on the upper strut mount.

Hope that helps,
Ron

Aftermarket struts offer resistance in both directions. I think you'd find that the original springs are just fine when assembled with new struts/shocks.

Just use the OE springs the car came w/.
See my Cave, Strut & Shock and rest of section.

Many thanks! You just saved me lots of headache thinking I needed to source new springs to go with new struts! Always something to learn and glad this forum is here!

In case anybody is interested, here’s what I found. If you want custom springs made... $270 a pair

The Rate can be OEM or increased or decreased if you desire.
Production time is three to four weeks.
