How to 'lock' a isuzu 5 speed? (Page 1/1)

I am trying to disassemble an Isuzu 5 speed transmission, more out of curiosity at this stage than with any hope it is repairable (found bits of metal by the drain plug!).

I have the end cover off and thre ate two nuts holding gears on the shafts.

The book says to use J33366 to lock the transmission so it does not turn so that you can remove the nuts from the end of the shafts.

This is J33366:

Basically a bar that bolts across the bell housing with a splined 'socket' that you can lock in place with a pin.

Trouble is, I don't have one of those and being cheap I need some way to lock the shafts so that I can get those bolts off.
If I had an old clutch plate I could probably use that or make something from it that would work, but I don't, so.......

I don't really want to stick something between the gears as the box 'might' be savable so I am looking for a non destructive way to do this.
I could put a socket on both shafts and hold one in place to get the other one off but that still leaves me with one nut to get off.

Anyone got any ideas for how to lock the shafts.

Air impact wrench?

A piece of wood would probably work as a wedge between the gears, without damaging the teeth.

Remove the shifter and move the shift forks to engage 2 gears at once. That will lock it up.

You will want to bend, grind, or drill the staked section on the nut to make them easier to remove.

Ltlfrari, I'll be watching your progress with interest, as I have an Isuzu with a blown second gear sitting on the shelf. I kinda wanna tear it down, too, out of curiosity. I actually like the Isuzu, as it has as close to a good FDR as you can get for a V8 swap...just take it easy with the right foot when in 2nd.

I already had the shifter assembly removed because I need to swap it for a Fiero one (this box is not a Fiero box), plus you have to remove it to remove one of the case bolts.
I tried for ages but could not get it to go into two gears at once.
In the end I came up with this high tech solution for the nut nearest in this pic:

then swapped sides for the other nut:

After that it all came apart pretty easily except for the ball in the reverse detent hole:

It's a long hole and the ball will just not come out. I've tried banging it, using a magnet, begging! Nothing.. So it's still in there although the spring and nut are out. Hopefully I can get it out later.

So now I need a puller to get this bushing off:

After that I 'think' it should come apart.
Such fun on a rainy Sunday afternoon

Attempt #1 at hacking a puller from some angle iron to make the legs:

Didn't work

Anything I might say is probably worth what you paid for it, so treat it accordingly!

So this was my solution to the puller leg problem, made some new ones from 3/16" bar

Then pulled the sleve up the shaft enough to get the proper puller legs on there. The wood clamp holds the legs of the puller in place under the lip on the sleve and stops them from popping out and the vice grip is so that I've got something to hold on to to stop it spinning while I screw the puller bolt down.

Ta Daa..!

After which the case half came apart easily

Just gotta find the damage now but not seen anything for a quick cursory look.
