Best lubricant for door hinges? (Page 1/1)

What’s the best thing to put on them that doesn’t look nasty last a good while and doesn’t attract too much crap? Thanks

I use a small dab of white lithium grease.

Many Hinge parts are installed dry.

Roller use plastic bearing and many oil/grease types will ruin them if not worn out already.

Brass bushings... Brake grease.
Won't run or wash out easy.
While may hold some crap on surface, Won't draw in crap into the bushing easy too.

Unlubricated plastic hinge bushings seems like a relatively new innovation.

The Jeep Wrangler JL could not have lubricated door hinges, because you can't sell a new vehicle with greasy exposed hinges.

From what I heard from a guy involved in the JL door hinges, there was a bunch of trial-and-error to get those plastic bushings working right without lube, without squeaking.

Of course not every company has the same mastery of different parts.

Edit: anyone know what pre-JL Jeeps used for door hinges?

I put 3 in 1 oil on mine, always have never had any issues from old to new.

"anyone know what pre-JL Jeeps used for door hinges?"

Yes...external, dry hinges and a limiting strap. As simple as simple can be.

Hmmm, made of plastic or metal?

It could be that companies don't remember how to do things, so they have to re-invent the wheel for each generation of product.

The hinge is metal. The strap is, well, a strap....made out of fabric, maybe cordura.
