LQ1 Main Bearing Cap Bolts (Page 1/1)

Hello all. I'm in the middle of an LQ1 swap into my 88. I was about to begin reassembly when it occurred to me that I don't know if the main bearing cap bolts can be reused. /does anyone here know. The torque specs say 37 ft. lb. plus 75 degrees which suggests that these are torque to yield bolts. Does that necissarily mean they can't be reused?

Torque + angle is a good method to achieve some desired stretch in a bolt.

The desired stretch can be a slight stretch, in the elastic zone, or it can be a bigger stretch, in the plastic (i.e. beyond yield) zone.

On the normal Fiero engine this is not normally a throw-away bolt, and from what I know the 3.4 has pretty much the same bottom end as any of the pushrod engines.

I think I would just try using the used bolts; if any bolt feels easier to turn than the others at the end of the angle movement, then there might be a problem.

5hankyou Mr. Brunelle. Reuse it is.

Torque + Angle and Torque-to-Yield are different things.

Torque + Angle, like pmbrunelle said, is just a more precise way of achieving a given bolt stretch than torque alone.

Torque-to-Yield stretches the bolt so hard it stays stretched.

Only a very small fraction of Torque+Angle applications are Torque-to-Yield, and none in a 2.8 or 3.4.
