V6 air box gasket (Page 1/1)

I purchased an 88 Formula needing some TLC. My air box was rusting out from the inside. The filter's wire cage had even rusted out. This car has been sitting for a while. Water was not getting sucked in. Water falls in from above through the louvered panel, drips down the side of the filter box, and the bracket below and holding the air box is holding this water. It isn't draining away. The original gasket between the bracket and the bottom of the air box, well, is paper and paper thin. It was not sealing out the water. Again, the water wasn't draining so there you go; rust.

I have since learned that Rodney Dickman sells a gasket set, but I didn't know about it when I fixed my problem. I first cleaned up the parts, encapsulated the remaining rust, and painted the parts. For a new gasket I used an Oil-Resistant Compressible Buna-N Gasket pipe gasket from McMaster-Carr. I bought two thicknesses; 0.125" and 0.0625". $1.58 and $1.00 respectively. Of course I had to pay shipping. To my door the very next day was $10.00 total. Here's a link to PN #8516T138. I'm not knocking Rodney Dickman's gasket, but it's cork. I believe the rubber will hold up better. No where near original and I don't care.

I wasn't sure which gasket I would use, but I ended up using the thicker 0.125" gasket. I also drilled six 0.125" drain holes in the bracket. The thicker gasket takes up unevenness between the mating surfaces and makes the air box stand proud of the bracket that was collecting and holding water. The six small drain holes facilitate water drainage. I thought about a thin coat of silicone between the bracket and the gasket, but decided to see how it works first without it. Hopefully this has fixed my water issue. I did a quick water test. I heavily spritzed water around the air box to simulate rain. I opened the air box and saw no water. I also could see the not being collected water draining from the bracket through the drain holes I made.
