Where is the squeak, lol (Page 1/1)

Hey gang:
Finally ordering struts and shocks for the 1986, 2M6... when I push down on the rear of the car, I get a loud squeak from the back right, pretty sure it’s original suspension. Would the squeaking be coming from the spring or the strut?

My 88 GT does the same squeak, from the back, but only going over large bumps or potholes. I'm also changing my struts too because they are leaking oil badly, see if it will fix the squeak problem.

Several years ago, when I was preparing my Formula for autocross, one of the things I did in addition to installing lowering springs in the back was to also omit the rubber isolators/cushions/pads/donuts... whatever they're called... that go between the springs and the perch on the struts as well as the underside of the top hats. I thought they were extraneous and wouldn't be missed. Anyway, every few months, I now need to spray JIG-A-LOO around the top of the spring to stop it from squeaking against the top hat. (The perch doesn't appear to be a problem.) Strangely enough, this only occurs on the passenger side.

In short, the squeaking you're hearing may be due to a rubber isolator being misaligned and/or worn through between the spring and top hat. Spray some silicone lubricant up there and see if the squeaking stops.

Thanks Patrick, I will give that a try! Cheap an easy.... a good place to start. But should still replace struts and shocks at some point anyway.
